Stop At: Marietas Islands, Mexico
Step aboard a catamaran that whisks you away to the Marieta Islands, a national park off the coastline. You’ll be wowed by two volcanic rocks festooned with birds, a former bombing range for Mexico’s early military before the islands received protected status, thanks to Jacques Cousteau.
You won’t be able to land on the protected shores, but delight in sighting sea turtles, dolphins, and giant manta rays in the transparent waters teeming with colorful fish. In the winter, listen for singing humpbacks or spot a breaching whale.
Next, board a Panga boat (dinghy) for an even closer look at the marine wildlife residents, including wahoo, mahi, marlin, and blue-footed boobies, along the battered rocks.
Your captain then navigates out of the protected area and to a nearby site where you can spend an ample two hours exploring surrounding caverns by snorkel, paddleboard, and kayak. When you get hungry, make yourself a sandwich on board, and enjoy the open bar of beer and soft drinks.
