Stop At: Piedras Encimadas, Puebla Mexico

The wonder of nature is manifested in this stunning valley of which 200 hectares are owned by the State Government. It is located 40 minutes from the city, following the northern route access to the city (federal highway Zacatlán-Tulancingo) traveling 21 kilometers until you reach a junction which is duly signposted that will take you to the Piedras Encimadas Valley, to which you’ll arrive after traveling 10 kilometers more.

Once in this place, you can enjoy unforgettable contact with the magic of nature to see the impressive and enigmatic rock formations that the erosion, rain and wind have formed over millions of years, so you can see the sitting elephant, the head of Popeye, the seal, the owl, the virgin, the bird, the dove, the family, the seahorse, the mother, loving, the crib, the perfect couple; in a nutshell, dozens of figures that will undoubtedly leave you in awe. Access to the Valley is free and you and your family can travel freely. There is also a camping area in the valley.

Currently, it already offers complementary services that do have a cost and are attended by trained personnel, among these are: a thrilling zip line, hiking guides, tours on horseback, restrooms, a dining place with cooks offering typical foods of the region, in this spot you will find shops of handicrafts and souvenirs. Near the Valley there are cabins for lodging there. Piedras Encimadas Valley “a challenge to your imagination and the laws of gravity.”

Zacatlán is the typical place that when you know it and you enjoy it, it is very difficult not want to go back and that is exactly what happened to me.

When you first arrive in this magical town that is surrounded by cliffs and rock formations, you realize that you’re beginning a journey through time.

This place is full of surprises, gifts from people, and nature to which it is impossible to say no; the huge floral clock in the main square, the superb Franciscan Ex-convent or the Parish of San Pedro and San Pablo make this place simply magical.

The great views, the stunning viewpoint from the ‘goldfinches ravine’, the vitromural for the 300 years of the town or the museum of the Centenary Watch Factory museum are a surprise to find that you cannot imagine.

A little more than 20 minutes from downtown, a freak of nature will fill you with energy and admiration; the Valle de Piedras Encimadas is ideal for hiking, horseback riding, camping, eating or just spending a day immersed in nature.

And of course the cuisine, bread, cider and spirits made from apples and all kinds of fruit are simply delicious.

Founded in 1993, in honor of the watchmaker businessman Mr. Alberto Olvera Hernández, founder of the First Factory of Monumental Watches in Latin America: “Centenario Watches”. One of its pieces is in the Zacalan main square, the Floral Clock.

The collection is made up of objects that narrate the measurement of time over the centuries. The visitor can take a tour of the entire plant, and experience the whole watch-making process from casting to the final testing of the watch.
