Stop At: Hacienda Tepeyahualco, Hacienda San Juan Bautista TepeyahualcoCamino al Capulín, s/n, 90543 Tlax., Mexico

The main attraction of Tepeyahualco, located 100 km northeast of Puebla, is the archaeological site of Cantona, which is believed to be one of the most populous metropolises of prehispanic Mexico because of its enormous expanse, some 14 km2. The visit to several acropolis, ball games, streets and avenues gives an idea of the size of this city. The interesting site museum, as well as the Caltonac museum in Tepeyahualco, house extensive collections of artifacts found in the excavations. The environment is dominated by water with beautiful lagoons in craters such as Alchichica, a very popular weekend recreational destination. There are also various ecotourism activities in the hills and mountains.

Its name means “house of the sun”. It is located in the municipality of Tepeyahualco and is considered the most urbanized city of pre-Hispanic Mexico for the highly elaborated planning and symmetry in all its buildings.

The city was built on a volcanic lava spill and was discovered in the mid-nineteenth century, but it is believed that it reached its cultural apogee between 150 and 200 AD, when it had approximately 867 hectares of land.
