Alebrijes, especially tonas and nahuales, are more than just figures.
They represent the spiritual connection between humans and animals, and are protective guardians according to the Zapotec worldview.

Each piece is hand-carved from copal wood.

Costume Parade in the Center of Town:
Experience the effervescence of carnival in the heart of town with a costume parade full of color and creativity. Stroll through the lively streets, capturing the magic of the moment and participating in the festive authenticity that characterizes Oaxaca during this time of year.

Continue your gastronomic day with a transfer to a local restaurant. Explore the authentic flavors of Oaxaca with a varied menu that includes moles, tlayudas and other regional delicacies. The carnival begins with the uncorking of the tepache, a traditional drink of the area, which is served with onion, chili and chili salt; and ends with the representation of the triumph of good over evil.

The music band visits the mezcal palenques of the community, from where the groups of pintos, women and old people come out to join the comparsas that will go through the town. The pintos dance and run looking for “El Colgado”, who is the character that represents evil and that must be eradicated that day. When they find him, he will be hit, thrown, pulled and dragged along the ground, symbolically, because this is a sign that the town is cleansing its sins.
