What makes Guided bus tour of the City of Mérida a unique experience ?
Mérida is the capital and most populated city of the state of Yucatán, head of the homonymous municipality and the twelfth city with the most inhabitants in Mexico. It is located in the southeast of the country, in the northwestern region of the state.
The city was founded on January 6, 1542 on the remains of the Mayan city called T’Hó, which was virtually uninhabited when the Europeans conquered the Yucatan Peninsula.
Paseo de Montejo is the name of a main road in the city of Mérida, Mexico, named after Francisco de Montejo, conqueror of Yucatán and founder of the capital city of Yucatán. It is an avenue that runs from the Santa Ana neighborhood, in the center of the city, to the exit towards the port of Progreso, Yucatán, including the extensions made at different times. Numerous public and private institutions are located along its route and it is the main part of the Mérida tourist corridor.
The layout and design are inspired by that of the French boulevards, especially that of the Champs Elysees in Paris. Flanked by large trees, it has a median and numerous roundabouts. On both sides of this avenue, beautiful palaces and mansions of wealthy people from the Yucatan of the 19th century were built.
It is located on Paseo de Montejo in one of the most trafficked roundabouts in the city of Merida.
It is the work of the sculptor Romulo Rozo, who through this work shows us part of the history of Mexico, from the founding of Tenochtitlán until the mid-twentieth century.
Details of the work:
In this monument you can find many details of Yucatan, such as. The shield of the city of Mérida, the chacmol, the Mayan hut, 2 armed and prostrate tiger knights, representing the surrender and protection of the Mexican armed forces.
In the lower part we can find a large sculpted ceiba tree, with 4 butterflies in the upper part, the glory and the conquest of the peoples of Mexico.
In the center and apart we find the symbol of Mexico, which is the eagle devouring a snake.
The Palace was built on the same site where the old “Royal Houses” stood in colonial times, which housed the Yucatecan rulers as well as several of their main collaborators. Its location is at the intersection of two of the busiest streets in Mérida: 60 and 61.
The Palace project, as we see it today, was carried out in 1879 during the government of Mr. Manuel Romero Ancona, according to a design by the engineer Olegario G. Cantón.
The Palace, in an eclectic classicist style, covers a quadrangular surface of 42 meters in front and in the background. It consists of 2 floors adorned with portals and a beautiful quarry stone staircase. Inside, a large central patio stands out.
Its façade shows a replica of the bell of the church of the town of Dolores, which the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla used to summon the people to a struggle that ended with the country’s independence.
