Are you ready to explore off the beaten tourist tracks and eat like a local? Join me on this private walking food tour (no groups!). We will visit 2 markets and 1 traditional barrio to taste 3 iconic dishes of Jalisco:

• Barbacoa: shredded beef tacos with a unique mix of spices.
• Torta ahogada: Mexico’s version of pulled pork, served in a salsa-drowned crispy sandwich.
• Birria: a juicy and hearty goat stew, served with hand-made tortillas and lime.

First we will try tortas ahogadas and barbacoa tacos in two stands that I’ve known since childhood at Mercado Libertad, the largest indoor market in Latin America and ultimate food heaven!

Then, we will visit Mercado Corona to admire a wide variety of regional food products. We’ll also visit the Cathedral and its surrounding plazas before trying birria, the house specialty at Nueve Esquinas.

* The barbacoa tacos and the torta are already included in the final price but the birria is NOT, so please bring debit/credit or $200 mxn pesos.

This gigantic market is vibrant! So get ready for a fully-immersive experience of engagement with Guadalajara’s working-class culture. Since this is a private tour, we can go at our own pace. Make sure to bring cash in mxn pesos so you can get whatever you like! There is an endless diversity of souvenirs, crafts and products. We can take as long as you whish to buy anything you need. As part of the culinary experience we will try 1. tortas ahogadas, 2. tacos de barbacoa, 3. traditional candies, 4. exotic local fruits. Vegan and vegetarian choices are also available.

Stop At: El Mercado Corona, Avenida Hidalgo, Guadalajara Mexico

Guadalajara’s local families get fresh fruits and vegetables at Mercado Corona since the 1800’s. We will discover and taste the unique regional products, including: mexican sweet potatoes or camotes with honey, baked goods and sweets, fresh fruits with lemon and powder chillies, agave and bee honeys, edible cactus or nopales, pitayas, and so much more!

Stop At: Nueve Esquinas, Avenida La Paz and Avenida16 de Septiembre, Plaza de las 9 Esquinas, Guadalajara 44100 Mexico

This plaza connects nine streets and is home to the city’s oldest restaurants. The house specialty at Nueve Esquinas is birria, a juicy and delicious hearty meat stew, the most emblematic dish of the state of Jalisco, served with hand-made tortillas, cilantro, onions, lemon and salsa.

Stop At: Guadalajara Cathedral, Av Alcalde 10 Zona Centro, Guadalajara 44100 Mexico

We will also have a chance to visit the Cathedral and its surrounding plazas and landmarks. Remember: since this is a private tour at any point we can stop and take a break, get coffee/ice cream, or take as many photographs as you need. As we walk and explore, I will give you an introduction to the city’s history, architecture and local culture.

• Barbacoa – Jalisco’s barbacoa is made from beef brisket, seasoned, steam cooked until tender and succulent, then used as filling for tacos or tortas with salsa.
• Carnitas – A marbled cut of pork braised or simmered with seasonings until tender. Then roasted to make it crisp and used as filling for tacos or tortas.

• Birria – Often served in celebrations or as a hangover cure, birria is a sweet, sour, slightly spicy, and utterly savory goat stew.
