San Miguel’s most famous sight is its parish church, characterized by its pink ‘wedding cake’ towers that soar above the town. These strange pinnacles were designed by indigenous stonemason Zeferino Gutiérrez in the late 19th century. He reputedly based the design on a postcard of a Belgian church and instructed builders by scratching plans in the sand with a stick. We will visit the church, the outer court, the inside, and you will have the time you need to tke pictures.

The Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez ’El Nigromante’ originally served as the cloister for the adjoining convent. Today it belongs to the Mexican National Art Institute (INBA) and is dubbed locally in San Miguel simply as “Bellas Artes”. The center offers classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, music and dance, and is known for its large murals including those by the celebrated Mexican painter David Alfaro Siquieros, a former teacher at the center. The center houses a museum, an auditorium, two art galleries, and a charming courtyard café.
