What to Expect When Visiting Buenavista, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Itinerary

Day 1: Afternoon Flat Top mountain hike

Pass By: Hotel Buenavista Beach Resort, 105 Federal Hwy 1, Spa Buenavista, 23580 Buenavista, B.C.S., Mexico
This historic beachfront hotel with hot springs will be your home for the next 4 nights. We start the tour from the hotel lobby.

Pass By: La Ribera, B.C.S., Mexico
After we welcome you to the beautiful East Cape of Baja, you have time to settle into your beachfront hotel. We then take a scenic 15-minute drive down a dirt road to our first hike, “Flat Top Mountain”. This easy hike explores unique cactus, rock formations, other flora and culminates on the top of an exceptionally large slab of slate. This giant slate perch is an incredible platform for views of more than 20 miles of unparalleled ocean and beach views all under the backdrop of the setting sun, over the Sierra De Laguna mountain range. It is an easy hike that provides a great introduction to the landscape on the East Cape and some of the best overall views in all Southern Baja. We take time for pictures and maybe a chance to spot sea life including whales. We will then descend and head back to the hotel for a group dinner. Those not wanting to hike the first day can stay and relax at the hotel and enjoy the amenities.

Day 2: Palmilla Canyon Hike

Stop At: Hotel Buenavista Beach Resort, 105 Federal Hwy 1, Spa Buenavista, 23580 Buenavista, B.C.S., Mexico
This is one of the most unique hikes in all of Southern Baja and it is so close to our hotel we begin the hike from the Hotel Lobby. We trek first through the local neighborhood into the Palmilla Canyon arroyo before a steep short ascent to the famous Buena Vista Flag Monument. From there we hike a ridgeline on a gentle climb to the Palmilla Canyon walls. Along the way, we will explore the many diverse cacti, flora, fauna, and birds that are unique and exclusive to this area of Baja. After a break on the top of the canyon, we descend into the box part of the canyon and take plenty of time for pictures as this is one of the more fascinating parts of the entire 5-day tour! We then exit the canyon through the arroyo and view fascinating flora on the steep canyon walls. After all of the exploration, you’ll arrive back in time for lunch at the hotel or in town. You will then be on your own for the remainder of the day.

We hike to the base of this mountain range a few kilometers off in the distance. The Sierra de la Laguna range frames all of our majestic hikes.

Day 3: Sol De Mayo premium hike with lunch

Pass By: Rancho Ecologico Sol de Mayo, Calle Guadalupe Victoria 410-B, Santiago 23500 Mexico
We will leave the hotel at 10 am to embark for one of the best Eco Expedition guided hiking trips in Baja! We take an air-conditioned shuttle for 45 minutes through the town of Santiago to the base of the Sierra De Laguna Wilderness.
We’ll hike on a rugged trail crisscrossing a beautiful stream several times back into the canyon above the waterfall surrounded by cacti, palm trees, and lots of canyon flora in this water oasis. We will then take the steep trail and stairs to the base of the waterfall and large freshwater pool. There will be time to sunbathe and relax, take a dip in the freshwater, or explore some more on your own. We will eat our packed lunch among the true beauty of the canyon.
This spectacular sanctuary is hidden in the heart of La Zorra Canyon at the base of the Sierra De La Laguna Biosphere Preserve.
We will take time on the way back for a quick visit to historic Santiago.

Stop At: 22790 Santiago, B.C., Mexico
We stop for a short visit to this historic little town that was established by the Spaniards who built a mission here in 1724. We will take a short walk through town before boarding back in our air-conditioned shuttle for a 35 minute ride to the hotel.

Stop At: Sierra de la Laguna, Baja California Sur, Mexico
We are at the base and entry to this mountain range. We will hike into the actual lower part of this spectacular wilderness above the waterfall.
Duration: 30 minutes

Day 4: Los Barriles View Trail and beyond

Pass By: Los Barriles, Los Barriles, Baja California
We start the hike right from the famous barrels at the entrance of Los Barriles. Barriles is barrels in Spanish. We begin on a popular hike and bike trail making a steep ascent to the ridgeline and once you reach the top, the view is breathtaking, making it all worth the while! It is the perfect and best view of the Los Barriles community and of the giant arroyo that borders the town. In times of storms, the arroyo swells up like a major river. We will continue a gentle climb on the ridgeline with consistent views of the Sierra De Laguna mountains, Sea of Cortez, and adjacent canyons. We will then take an alternate view route zigzagging back to add to your opportunities to enjoy the views and take pictures. Once back to the barrels we will make time in town for food, shopping, and exploring this quaint town of Los Barriles.

Day 5: Beach time before traveling home
