Every week, a market (or souk) is held in various locations across each Province—similar to a State in the US or a county in the UK. These souks typically occur in larger towns or villages that serve as central hubs for the surrounding rural communities and local farms. The weekly market is deeply rooted in local traditions, to the point that many towns incorporate the day of their souk into their names. For example, if you look at a map of Morocco, any town with “el had” in its name hosts its weekly souk on a Sunday, while “khamiss” indicates that the market takes place on a Thursday. The largest rural market in the Essaouira region takes place every Sunday in Had Draa located 30 km up the road towards Marrakech. The farmers of the region travel there by donkey to offer their crops, animals, and crafts, and to also do their weekly shopping. The gathering at Had Draa is mainly attended by men although everyone socializes, chats over tea with friends, and exchanges news in cafés or under tents. You will witness the wonderful construction of the seventeenth century, built by the Dominican Friars, in San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya, where its kinship altars stand out with images of the Virgin of the Rosary, the Diseding, Mary, the Child and the Arcangel Gabriel. One of the most beautiful pictorial works is that of Saint Jerome of the indigenous painter Juan de Arrué, who is said to be his famous work. We visited the Archaeological Zone of Yagul, a city that flourished as an urban center after the dean of Monte Albán (800 years d.c.). Later after a short abandonment, Yagul resurfaced to become a city-state, in the Oaxaca Valley, which prevailed until shortly before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. In the end we visited Tlacolula, where we will walk through one of the most traditional tianguis in the country, one of the most complete and colorful in Oaxaca. This fascinating place is set on Sundays on the main street of the village.
